Abstract
This article examined the key factors that have contributed to the emergence of English as a dominant global language spoken internationally. It explored how the legacy of British colonialism during the 18th to 20th centuries spread English to Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, and made it an official language in many former colonies. The rise of
the United States as an economic and cultural superpower after World War II further projected English worldwide. The article also discussed how English became the lingua franca for crucial domains like business, banking, computing, science, and diplomacy.
